NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. – Completing a weekend of splits, the Mount Saint Mary College softball team took the first game from NYU-Poly, 5-1, before falling in the second, 11-3, during a Skyline Conference double-header on Sunday. The Knights are now 9-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the Skyline.
Sophomore
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) was excellent once again, pitching a complete game in which she allowed just six hits and one run. Maynes struck out three and almost completely subdued a potent NYU-Poly offense.
Scoreless into the fourth, the Knights responded to an NYU-Poly run with a run of their own. Junior
Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) scored on a sacrifice fly from senior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) to tie the game at 1-1.
In the fifth, the Mount exploded for four runs. The inning was highlighted by a two-run homer from freshman
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.) and the Knights scratched out two more runs on a Poly error.
Game two was a much different story, as the bats for the Fighting Blue Jays woke up. NYU-Poly would launch four home runs in the game, including back-to-back shots in the third inning, on their way to 11 runs. The Knights could only manage single runs in the first, third, and fifth frames and the game was called after five innings.
In their next scheduled games, the Knights will host SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, March 30. The opener is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the Mount Airy Sports Complex in New Windsor.
