OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout to lead Mount Saint Mary College to a 5-0 victory in Saturday's opening game against Old Westbury. The Knights (8-3-1, 1-1 Skyline) dropped the second game, 6-3.
The Knights jumped out quickly in the opener and scored a run in the top of the first when senior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) knocked in freshman Brittany O'Brien (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who had reached with a bunt single.
The Knights would add another run in the fourth when a single from freshman
Chelsea Hepburn (New York, N.Y.) plated freshman
Ashley Peel (Shelton, Conn.). Johnson drove home another run in the fifth inning to make it 3-0, this time scoring junior
Lacey Kehlenbeck (Port Jervis, N.Y.) with a single to left. Kehlenbeck reached on a bunt and proceeded to steal second and third base before scoring on the Johnson single.
With Maynes still cruising in the circle, Kehlenbeck added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run single in the sixth inning. Her base hit scored Hepburn and Maynes to make it 5-0 in favor of the Knights.
Maynes didn't allow a runner to reach scoring position and walked just two batters while striking out six. At one point, she recorded ten consecutive outs from the middle of the fourth to the middle of the seventh.
Kehlenbeck, Johnson, and Hepburn all finished with two hits apiece. Kehlenbeck added a run and two RBIs, Johnson had a pair of RBIs, and Hepburn tallied a run and a run batted in. O'Brien and Peel each had a hit and scored a run.
After opening game two with a pair of runs in the first inning, the Knights would not score again until the top of the seventh. Meanwhile, Old Westbury scored single runs in the first, third, and fifth innings before hanging three more on the board in the bottom of the sixth.
O'Brien had three of the Mount's five hits in game two, finishing the game 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Kehlenbeck and junior
Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.) each recorded a hit and scored a run.
The Knights return to action tomorrow with a home double-header against NYU-Poly. First pitch is scheduled for noon at the Mount Airy Sports Complex in New Windsor, N.Y.
