Schaeffer Breaks Digs Record as Knights Oust Rutgers-Newark for 14th Straight Win

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – On senior night, Mount Saint Mary College senior Heather Schaeffer (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) broke the all-time school record for career digs as the Knights defeated Rutgers-Newark in four sets (23-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18).  The win was the fourteenth consecutive for the Mount, which now stands at 18-9 overall.

Needing just four digs to surpass the previous mark of 1,145, Schaeffer broke the record during the first set and collected the game ball to commemorate the occasion.  Schaeffer went on to finish with a team-high 21 digs on the evening.

Senior Teresa Sorrentino (Bellerose, N.Y.) also turned in a nice performance, posting a team-high 14 kills.  Junior Mary Ann Raftery (Long Beach, N.Y.) and freshman Taylor Woegens (Bogota, N.J.) each finished with nine kills.  Junior Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) totaled 42 assists to go along with 20 digs.

Junior Rachel Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) led Rutgers-Newark with 18 kills.  Sophomore Jen Mendoza (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) tallied 33 assists.

Up next for the Mount is a pair of non-conference matches at SUNY College at Old Westbury on Saturday.  The Knights will take on Brooklyn College at 1:00 p.m. and then Old Westbury at 3:00 p.m.
