GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Making their 2010 debut, the Mount Saint Mary College volleyball team struggled at the Battlefield Classic hosted by Gettysburg College. On Friday, the Knights opened with a loss to Gettysburg College in straight sets (25-10, 25-17, 25-17) and then fell to the University of Scranton in five sets (19-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-9). Westminster College beat the Knights in straight sets (25-10, 25-12, 25-16) on Saturday.
Despite losing to Gettysburg College in straight sets, several Knights performed well. Sophomore
Mary Ann Raftery (Long Beach, N.Y.) had a team-high five kills in the match. Junior
Jacqueline Nadeau (Uniondale, N.Y.) and classmate
Heather Schaeffer (Hopewell Juntion, N.Y.) tied for the team lead with 11 digs.
Nadeau continued her solid play against the University of Scranton and totaled a team-high 16 digs. Sophomore
Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) served up 4 aces and tallied a team high 21 assists. Senior
Elizabeth Douress (Rahway, N.J.) led the team with 9 kills. Against the Royals, the Knights jumped out to a two-sets to none advantage, but couldn't close the door and eventually fell in a fifth set, 15-9.
In a straight set loss to Westminster College, Schaeffer recorded a team high 19 digs. Raftery also contributed a team-high 4 kills.
Next Saturday, the Knights will travel to Mitchell College for a 12:00 p.m. match. Following the Mitchell match, the Knights will play Curry College at 2:00 p.m.
