NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team conceded a goal in the ninth minute of the first overtime to lose to SUNY College at Old Westbury, 1-0. The Knights fell to 0-7 on the year and to 0-1 in the Skyline, while the Panthers improved to 4-3 overall and to 1-0 in the conference.
With time ticking down in the first period of overtime, Old Westbury freshman Anthony Ippolito (North Bellmore, N.Y.) released a cross from the right side of the box near the end line. The ball sailed to the back post, where senior Ugur Kahveci (West Babylon, N.Y.) headed it just beyond the reach of the goalkeeper and inside the post for the game-winner.
Mount Saint Mary had a golden opportunity to win the game inside the final ninety seconds of regulation. The first chance by freshman
Brandon Mincher (Bayport, N.Y.) was blocked by an Old Westbury defender, but he collected his own rebound and fired a second attempt that hit squarely on the crossbar.
Freshman goalkeeper Matthew Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) was excellent in his Skyline Conference debut for the Knights. Darling finished with nine saves, and his stop in the 59th minute was the best of the afternoon. After a dangerous diagonal ball into the box, Darling dove to his left to save a short-angle shot that was destined for the back of the net.
Old Westbury sophomore goalkeeper Pablo Diaz (Holtsville, N.Y.) didn't miss a beat upon entering the game in the 40th minute for the injured starting keeper. Diaz made six saves to earn the victory for the Panthers.
The Knights received yet another strong effort from their back four as they thwarted the speedy Old Westbury attacked for most of the afternoon. Sophomores
Kevin Ryan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and
Brian Southworth (Newburgh, N.Y.) were especially effective.
Freshman
Anthony Rizzi (Cornwall, N.Y.) had his strongest performance of the season on the wing, while sophomore
Matt Pagano (Mahopac, N.Y.) created a few dangerous chances. Senior
Francesco Marando (Slate Hill, N.Y.) and junior Mike Del Rosso (Washingtonville, N.Y.) each had a pair of shots on goal.
The Knights return to action on Thursday, September 23 as they'll host Sage in a Skyline Conference contest. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. in Newburgh.
