DelPiano Homers Mount Past Old Westbury

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Senior Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) hit a pair of home runs, the second to give Mount Saint Mary College a one-run lead in the seventh inning, as the Knights defeated SUNY College at Old Westbury, 7-6, on Saturday.  The Mount will play Farmingdale State College in the loser's bracket final this afternoon.

Trailing 6-5 and down to their final out, the Knights stayed alive as junior Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) singled.  Up next, DelPiano launched a two-run home run to give the Knights a 7-6 advantage.

Freshman pitcher Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) set Old Westbury down in order during the bottom of the seventh, preserving a stunning come-from-behind victory.

Mount Saint Mary scored all of their other runs during the third inning.  Freshman Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) doubled to lead off the frame and then moved to third when senior Liz Carlson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) reached on an error.  Maynes laced a two-run single and then scored when Governale found a gap for a double.  With the game now tied at 3-3, DelPiano sent the Knights to their first lead of the day with a two-run home run.

Old Westbury freshman Nicole Petrucci (Locust Valley, N.Y.) cleared the bases with a three-run double in the bottom of the fourth, staking the Panthers to a 6-5 advantage.  The score would remain the same until DelPiano's second long ball of the day.

DelPiano finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in.  Governale was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Maynes was also 3-for-4, scoring once and driving home two more.

Maynes went the distance in the circle, allowing seven hits and six earned runs.  She struck out six to claim the win for the Knights.

Mount Saint Mary will take on Farmingdale in an elimination game later this afternoon.  The winner will take on NYU-Poly in the championship series tomorrow.
