Mount Drops Two to Rensselaer

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – In a non-conference double-header on Thursday afternoon, Mount Saint Mary College dropped a pair of games to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Knights (8-12) lost the first game, 12-2, and the second game, 9-0.

In the first contest, the Engineers (7-10) blew open the game with a six-run third inning. All of the damage was done with two outs and following an error by the Mount. With the bases loaded following the error, sophomore Sarah Paulding (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) ripped a two-run single to right field, plating the first runs of the inning. Two more runs scored on a pair of Knight errors and then freshman Gillian McCarthy (Worthington, Ohio) closed out the inning with a two-run single to right-center.

Mount Saint Mary responded with a run in the bottom of the third as freshman Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) crossed on a wild pitch. The Knights wouldn't score for the rest of the way, however, as RPI junior pitcher Jen Bach (Lansdale, Pa.) shut them down over the final three innings. Bach went the distance to collect the victory, limiting the Mount to just four hits while striking out four.

Paulding finished game one 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored. Sophomore Sarah Heller (Guilderland, N.Y.) and senior Becky Bailey (Rome, N.Y.) each rapped out three hits and scored two runs. Bailey also drove home a pair of runs with a single in the sixth inning.

Mount Saint Mary junior Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Senior Amy Romito (Washingtonville, N.Y.) also went 1-for-2.

In game two, junior pitcher Felicia Bua (Gilford, N.H.) blanked the Knights for six innings, limiting them to just four hits. Bua struck out three and walked one.

The Engineers scored in four of their six frames, including two in the first, one in the third, two in the fourth, and four in the sixth. McCarthy finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and a pair of runs batted in, while Jen Bach also completed a 4-for-4 day with two runs scored and an RBI.

For the Knights, Johnson ripped another single to finish the day 2-for-5. Sophomore Kerry Ulmer (Floral Park, N.Y.) smacked a double to left-center in the fifth inning, but was left stranded on the base paths.

Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Saturday as they'll host the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline Conference action. The double-header is scheduled for a noon start on Kaplan Field.
