NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Junior
Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) and freshman
Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) recorded a pair of RBI singles to help take the lead in the fifth inning of the second game of Wednesday's double-header, only to fall short to SUNY New Paltz, 10-7. The Hawks won the first game, 10-4.
Trailing 6-4 in the top of the fifth inning, junior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) doubled, senior
Amy Romito (Washingtonville, N.Y.) reached on an error, and Governale and DeMarco followed with consecutive RBI singles. The Knights led 7-6 after sophomore
Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk. The lead was short-lived though, as New Paltz rallied back for two runs in the bottom of the inning behind an RBI single by senior Melyssa Cilmi (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and an RBI double by senior Elizabeth May (Commack, N.Y.).
New Paltz junior pitcher Jillian Gallagher (Buchanan, N.Y.) held the Knights scoreless over the final two innings to preserve the 10-7 victory. Gallagher won both decisions on the day and did not allow an earned run in 5.2 innings of combined relief.
DeMarco and Governale each went 2-for-4, driving in three and scoring two runs, respectively. Senior
Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) and Scott each chipped in two hits, while senior pitcher
Liz Carlson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) went the distance and took the loss.
In the first game, the Knights tied the score 3-3 in the second inning after a Carlson RBI triple followed a DeMarco two-run double. The home team responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning behind an RBI single from senior Victoria Kyle (Staten Island, N.Y.) and an RBI triple from senior Rose Dovi (Cortland, N.Y.). The Hawks never looked back in a 10-4 victory.
Dovi finished the first game 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Her bat carried the day for the Hawks as the senior finished the double-header 6-for-8 with seven RBI and five runs scored, including her second homer of the season.
Governale and Scott finished game one with two hits apiece, while senior pitcher
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) went the distance and was on the short end of the decision.
The Knights take the field tomorrow at home against RPI at 3:30 p.m.
