FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - In the opening game of the Skyline Conference Tournament, third-seeded Mount Saint Mary College fell to second-seeded Farmingdale State College, 7-3, in Farmingdale. The Knights will take on SUNY College at Old Westbury in a loser's bracket game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
After a scoreless top of the first from the Mount, Farmingdale freshman Maressa Mistretta (Shirley, N.Y.) singled through the middle and moved to third on a double from sophomore Rebecca Richman (West Islip, N.Y.). Sophomore Kaitlin Keenan (West Islip, N.Y.) plated the first run of the inning with a bunt single and junior Nicole Farber (Oakdale, N.Y.) drove home the second run of the inning with a sac fly.
Still leading 2-0, sophomore Shelby Martin (New Paltz, N.Y.) homered in the second inning to make it 3-0. With the bases loaded later in the frame, Farber doubled down the left field line to drive in two. Sophomore Aubrey Walker (West Babylon, N.Y.) laced a two-run single to left-center to make the score 7-0 in favor of the Rams.
The Knights finally got on the board in the fifth inning as junior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) lifted a sac fly to center. Unfortunately, the Mount left the bases loaded in the inning and still trailed 7-1.
With the bases loaded again in the sixth inning, Johnson drew a walk to force in the second Mount run. Again though, the Knights left the bases loaded as a groundball to third ended the threat.
Freshman
Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to pull the Knights within four, but they would get no closer.
Farmingdale sophomore Hope Zino (Bay Shore, N.Y.) pitched four scoreless innings to earn the victory. She allowed just two hits and struck out four in improving to 12-4. At the plate, Farber finished 1-for-3 with three runs batted in, while Mistretta went 2-for-2 with two runs scored
Mount Saint Mary freshman
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) went the distance for the Knights, allowing eight hits and three earned runs. Sophomore
Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) finished 2-for-3, while senior
Amy Romito (Washingtonville, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
