NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College softball team took a pair of non-conference games from John Jay on Thursday to improve to 16-18 on the season. The Knights won the opener, 10-6, and the second game, 10-1.
In game one, the Knights scored in each of the first five innings, racking up ten runs. Freshman
Danielle Sedia (Bronx, N.Y.) singled home a run in the second inning and then sophomore
Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.) drove home another run with a sacrifice fly. In the third frame, senior
Liz Carlson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) did the big damage with a two-run triple to deep right field. Senior
Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) delivered a two-run double in the fourth inning, and sophomore
Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) followed with an RBI-triple in the fifth inning.
Scott finished the first game 4-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sedia batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman pitcher
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) went the distance in the circle to collect the victory.
Game two was all Mount Saint Mary right out of the gates. Sophomore
Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) kicked things off with a run-scoring single in the first and the followed up with a two-run single in the second. The Knights led 5-1 after two and continued to extend their lead with four runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Governale finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Sedia turned in another 2-for-4 performance and scored another pair of runs. Carlson pitched the first four innings to earn the win, allowing just three hits and one earned run.
Mount Saint Mary heads to Farmingdale State College on Saturday for a crucial Skyline Conference double-header. The games are slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
