Pair of Late Rallies Sends Mount to Skyline Sweep of St. Joseph's

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Behind a 7-for-8 performance from sophomore Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) and a pair of late-inning rallies, the Mount Saint Mary College softball team swept a Skyline Conference double-header from St. Joseph's College.  The Knights (13-17 overall, 9-1 conference) won the first game, 8-7, and the second game, 6-4.

In game one, the Knights carried a 6-0 lead into the seventh inning, but the Golden Eagles rallied for seven runs in the top half of the frame.  Sophomore Christina Frisina (Smithtown, N.Y.) tripled to clear the bases and then came around to score on an errant throw to bring St. Joseph's to within one  Senior Rosemary Flores (Brentwood, N.Y.) laced another triple later in the inning to drive home the tying run, and then scored the go-ahead run during a botched rundown.

Mount Saint Mary wouldn't blink though, and responded with two runs in the bottom half of the seventh.  After two quick outs, freshman Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) tripled to right-center and then scored on a double from senior Amy Romito (Washingtonville, N.Y.).  Romito moved to third on a base knock by senior Liz Carlson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), setting up Scott with a chance to win the game.  The sophomore came through with a single to the left side, setting off a celebration at the plate as Romito crossed with the winning run.

Scott finished game one 4-for-5 with three runs batted in and a pair of runs scored.  Carlson batted 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored.  Freshman Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.), also the winning pitcher, went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.  Maynes allowed just three earned runs in seven innings of work in the circle.

In game two, the Knights used a sixth inning rally to take control of the contest.   With the score tied at 4-4 and one out in the inning, Romito kicked off the rally by drawing a walk.  The senior would gallop home on a triple to the right-field wall from the red-hot Carlson.  The next batter, Scott, continued her standout day with a double to left, plating Carlson with an insurance run.

Adding to her heroics at the plate, Carlson pitched a complete game for the Knights.  She allowed just six hits and one earned run to collect the victory.  The senior set down twelve of the final fiteen batters to preserve the victory for the Mount.

Leading the Knights once again, Scott went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI in game two.  Carlson turned in a 2-for-3 performance with a run and an RBI.  Junior Jackie Governale (Bethpage, N.Y.) was credited with the only other RBI for the Mount as she drove home a third-inning tally with a single to center field.

Maintaining their grip on a share of first place in the Skyline Conference, the Knights enter the final week of the regular season on a high note.  They'll embark on the final week with a double-header at Lehman College on Tuesday.
