NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College softball team split a pair of Skyline Conference games with SUNY College at Old Westbury on Sunday. The Knights (11-13, 7-1 Skyline) took the opener, 7-1, while the Panthers (10-12, 4-4 Skyline) took the second game, 2-0.
Mount Saint Mary jumped out to a quick start in game one as sophomore
Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) tripled in the bottom half of the first. Scott scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore
Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.).
The Knights did their biggest damage in the second inning, stringing together four consecutive singles to lead off the frame. Freshman
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) singled home the first run of the inning and freshman
Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.) followed with another run-scoring single. Scott knocked home the final run of the inning with an RBI-groundout.
Maynes went the whole way in the circle, limiting the Panthers to just six hits and the one run. She struck out five to claim the victory.
DeMarco finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Junior
Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) also went 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs.
In game two, Old Westbury freshman Alyssa Clancy (Remsenburg, N.Y.) tossed a two-hit complete game to lead the Panthers to a 2-0 victory. Clancy also tripled home what would turn out to be the winning run in the first inning. She finished 2-for-4 at the plate and struck out nine while inside the circle.
Maynes worked all seven innings in game two as well. She allowed seven hits and two earned runs while striking out three. Junior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) and Governale recorded the only hits of the game for the Knights.
Up next for the Mount is a non-conference double-header at Stevens. The games are scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start under the lights.
