NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Freshman pitcher
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y) pitched a pair of two-hit complete games to lead Mount Saint Mary College to a sweep of conference rival Mount Saint Vincent. The Knights won the first game, 3-0, and the second, 7-3.
Trailing 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game, senior
Liz Carlson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) hit a two-run triple, scoring Maynes and junior
Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.), who had each reached on singles. Sophomore
Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) drove in Carlson with an RBI single and eventually scored on a Dolphin error.
The four-run lead was more than enough for Maynes, as she held Mount Saint Vincent scoreless over the final three innings to preserve the 7-3 victory. Maynes went the distance, striking out two and allowing only three unearned runs.
Junior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) reached base in all four plate appearances, going 2-for-2 and drawing two walks. Sophomore
Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.), freshman
Victoria DeMarco (Hicksville, N.Y.), Governale and Scott chipped in with two hits apiece.
In the third inning of the first game, Scott and Orender hit consecutive RBI groundouts, scoring Maynes and DeMarco, respectively. Scott came around to score on a wild pitch, giving the Knights three runs without recording a hit.
Dolphin senior pitcher Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, Ind.) went the distance, giving up only two hits and three unearned runs, but was outdueled by Maynes, who struck out eight in seven scoreless innings.
On the day, Maynes combined to throw fourteen innings without giving up an earned run, while striking out ten and surrendering only four hits.
The Knights take the field at home versus SUNY College at Old Westbury at noon.
