NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College freshman
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) and sophomore
Kerry Ulmer (Floral Park, N.Y.) each pitched a complete game to guide the Knights to a pair of victories over Purchase College on Sunday. The Mount (8-6, 4-0 Skyline) won the first game, 5-1, and the second game, 9-1.
After allowing a run in the first inning, Maynes blanked the Panthers the rest of the way in game one. She allowed just six hits and one walk, while striking out seven.
The Knights answered the first inning run as senior
Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) singled home the tying run. Senior
Amy Romito (Washingtonville, N.Y.) scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage.
In the second inning, sophomore
Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.) crushed a double to the bottom of the wall in left field, allowing sophomore
Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) to score easily from second. The Knights would tack on two more runs in the sixth inning, taking advantage of two Purchase errors to expand their lead.
DelPiano finished game one with two hits (2-for-3), a run batted in, and a run scored. Orender and Romito collected the only other hits for the Mount.
In game two, Ulmer scattered seven hits across five innings. The Panthers tallied their only run of the game in the fifth inning, as sophomore Jillian Lucas (River Edge, N.J.) doubled and came around to score on a single by sophomore Jennie Angelone (Howard Beach, N.Y.).
The Knights took advantage of another Purchase error to score their first run of the game. With Scott on first, Orender laid down a sacrifice bunt. As the throw went wide of first and down the right field line, Scott scampered home to give the Mount an early lead. Junior
Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) came through with a run-scoring single later in the inning to stake the Knights to a 2-0 advantage.
The big inning for Mount Saint Mary came in the third as the Knights rapped out eight hits and plated seven runs. Orender delivered the biggest blow of the inning, crushing a two-run homer over the wall in center field. Scott, who had already ripped a two-run single in the inning, scored on the Orender long ball.
Mount Saint Mary pounded out twelve hits in the game, including two each from Scott, Romito, DelPiano, and freshman
Danielle Sedia (Bronx, N.Y.). Scott finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.
With the victories, Mount Saint Mary maintained their early hold on first place in the Skyline Conference. The Knights are scheduled to play New Paltz tomorrow, but with rain in the forecast, the double-header may be rescheduled for later in the season.
