TROY, N.Y. – Freshman
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) hit a three-run home run to tie the game in the seventh inning and then watched as her teammates plated three runs in the eighth inning to steal the second game of a Skyline Conference double-header from Sage, 9-6. Mount Saint Mary (6-6, 2-0 Skyline) also won game one by a score of 4-2.
Sage (0-8, 0-2 Skyline) led 6-2 as the second game reached the sixth inning, but Mount Saint Mary wouldn't go away. The Knights scratched out a run in the top of the sixth as sophomore
Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.) drew a bases loaded walk. Then, in the seventh, Mount Saint Mary put runners on first and second with back-to-back singles, only to watch the Gators record the next two outs. Maynes stepped to the plate and crushed an 0-1 pitch to right-center for a game-tying three-run homer.
In the eighth inning, Mount Saint Mary took advantage of a Sage error to score their first run of the inning. Senior
Amy Romito (Washingtonville, N.Y.) added some insurance with a run-scoring double later in the inning and senior
Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) tacked on another run with an RBI single to give the Knights a three-run cushion.
Maynes, who entered the game as a relief pitcher in the fifth, retired Sage in order during the bottom half of the eighth inning to cement the come-from-behind victory. Maynes allowed just two hits over the final three and two thirds innings to earn the win. She struck out three.
Romito, DelPiano, junior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.), junior
Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.), and Maynes each rapped out a pair of hits for the Mount. The Knights finished with 14 hits.
For Sage in game two, sophomore Ashley Eberle (Delmar, N.Y.) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Sophomore Jennifer Ahearn (Cohoes, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
In game one, the Mount didn't waste any time in getting on the board. Orender reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice, advanced to third on a single by Romito, and then scored on a two-run single from Johnson. Romito scored from second on Johnson's base hit.
Sage trimmed the lead in the bottom half of the first as senior Kellie Jones (Troy, N.Y.) homered to center field. The score would remain 2-1 in favor of the Knights into the fourth inning.
In the Mount's half of the fourth, junior Governale led off with a single. Two consecutive outs followed and Orender was to be the third out as she struck out swinging. The ball got away from the Sage catcher, however, allowing Orender to reach and extend the inning. Sophomore
Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) drew a walk to load the bases and then Romito made the Gators pay with a two-run single to left-center.
Jones singled home another run in the bottom of the fifth to bring the Gators within two, but they would get no closer. Maynes escaped a bases loaded jam in the sixth and then eased through the seventh inning to preserve the victory. Maynes went the distance, allowing five hits and one earned run, while walking five and striking out six.
Johnson (2-for-3) and Romito (2-for-4) each finished with a pair of runs batted in. DelPiano collected three singles (3-for-4) and Governale also had two hits (2-for-4).
For Sage, freshman Gabriella Skillen (Milford, N.Y.) pitched all seven innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs. Jones went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in and a run scored.
