NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Behind the offense of senior
Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) and the pitching of freshman Catilin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) in game one, the Mount Saint Mary College softball team split a non-conference double-header with Hunter College on Wednesday. The Knights (4-6) won game one, 5-1, while the Hawks (4-2) won game two, 13-1.
After Maynes worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first inning, DelPiano sparked the offense in the bottom of the first. With sophomore
Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) on third and junior
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.), DelPiano crushed a double to right-center to bring home both runners.
The Knights added two more runs in the third. With the bases loaded, senior
Amy Romito (Washingtonville, N.Y.) laced a double to left field, plating Scott and DelPiano who had reached earlier in the inning.
Maynes was stellar in her Kaplan Field debut, limiting Hunter to just six hits and one run in seven innings of work. The freshman collected her fourth victory of the season.
In game two, the Hunter bats came alive. The top five hitters in the lineup for the Hawks combined to go 14-for-20 with five runs batted in and eight runs scored. Hunter knocked Maynes out of the game in the third inning.
Mount Saint Mary managed just four hits against Hunter sophomore pitcher Lauren Stensland (Babylon, N.Y.). Stensland worked all five innings to collect the victory for the Hawks.
Scott collected a pair of hits for the Knights in game two. Junior
Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) drove home the only run for the Mount with an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Mount Saint Mary heads to the Sage Colleges for a double-header on Saturday, Match 27. The Skyline Conference matchup is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
