ORLANDO, Fla. – The Mount Saint Mary College softball team swept Newbury College to close out their Florida trip with an overall record of 3-5. The Knights won both games by a score of 3-0.
In game one, senior
Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) provided all of the runs with a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Juniors
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) and
Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) led off the inning with back-to-back singles and then DelPiano drove a pitch over the wall in center field.
Freshman pitcher
Caitlin Maynes (Miller Place, N.Y.) did the rest of the work, blanking the Nighthawks for seven innings. She allowed just five hits and struck out five to collect her second victory of the Florida swing.
Maynes was even better in game two, allowing five hits and striking out eight for her second consecutive shutout.
The Knights scratched out a run in the second inning, as senior
Liz Carlson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) doubled home sophomore
Becky Seepersad (Farmingdale, N.Y.). DelPiano doubled the Mount's advantage in the third inning, knocking home Maynes with an RBI single. DelPiano also collected another RBI in the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
Finally safe and sound back in Newburgh, the Knights will have some time to prepare for the rest of their season. Mount Saint Mary will host Hunter College on Wednesday, March 24 in Newburgh.
