NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College freshman goalkeeper
Ron Bonilla (White Plains, N.Y.) made 17 saves on Monday evening, but still, the Knights lost to Rutgers-Newark in the second overtime period, 2-1. The Scarlet Raiders improved to 7-4-1 overall while the Mount fell to 0-10-2.
Bonilla was spectacular for the entire evening and didn't have a chance on the game-winning goal in the first minute of the second overtime. Rutgers-Newark sophomore Michael Kwiecinski (Cliffside Park, N.J.) trapped a cross in the box and fired a low shot to the far post for the game-winner. Senior Robert Campos (East Brunswick, N.J.) was credited with an assist on the play.
The Knights forced overtime with a goal in the 81st minute. After the ball slipped out the goalkeeper's hands, freshman
Rob Thompson (West Babylon, N.Y.) collected it and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Rutgers-Newark opened the scoring in the 17th minute as junior Mike Trenard (Northfield, N.J.) found senior Matt Tatro (Somerville, N.J.) on a diagonal feed into the box. Tatro beat Bonilla from inside the box to give the Scarlet Raiders an early advantage.
The lead could have been doubled or triple at the half if not for the play of Bonilla. In the 15th minute, the freshman made a leaping save to his left to punch away a shot from the top corner. He also saved a breakaway attempt in the 38th minute with a diving save to his right.
The Mount didn't record their first shot on goal until the 80th minute, but it was a dangerous one from sophomore
Matt Pagano (Mahopac, N.Y.). His knuckling shot was destined to sneak under the bar before senior goalkeeper Matt Zielyk (West Orange, N.J.) tipped it over the top for a corner.
The Scarlet Raiders outshot the Knights by a margin of 37-3.
Still seeking their first win of the season, the Mount will play the Polytechnic Institute of NYU in a Skyline Conference contest on Saturday, October 10. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at the College of Staten Island.
