Knights Take Salem State Tournament, Halverson Named Most Valuable Player

SALEM, Mass. - Sophomore Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) was named the tournament's most valuable player as the Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball swept their way to the title at the Salem State University tournament on Saturday.  The Knights defeated Southern Maine, Salem State, and Suffolk all in straight sets to claim the championship.

Mount Saint Mary opened the tournament with a straight set victory over Southern Maine (25-12, 25-7, 25-11). Halverson led the way with 28 assists and also tallied two kills, six aces, and two blocks. Freshman Kaylene Pennings (Minisink, N.Y.) tallied a team-high seven kills, while sophomore Mary Ann Raftery (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) added six kills and two blocks. Senior Elizabeth Douress (Rahway, N.J.) chipped in with four kills and four blocks.
In the second match, the Knights swept the hosts, Salem State (25-6, 25-19, 25-13). Junior Jacqueline Nadeau (Uniondale, N.Y.) and junior Courtney Kenney (Hicksville, N.Y.) tied for a team-high with seven kills. Douress added six kills and three blocks, while Raftery nabbed six kills and three aces. Halverson totaled three kills, three aces, and 18 assists.
Completing a perfect run through the tournament, the Mount defeated Suffolk University in the final match of the day (25-16, 25-12, 25-12). Nadeau and Douress each had six kills, while Kenney racked up five kills, two aces, and a block. Halverson collected 24 assists and also served up a team-high eight aces.
Mount Saint Mary will take their perfect Skyline record on the road to the Sage Colleges on Wednesday, October 6. The match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Troy, New York.
