NEWBURGH, NY – Mount Saint Mary College sophomore
Francesco Marando (Slate Hill, N.Y.) scored two goals, including a game-winning penalty kick in the 72nd minute, as the Blue Knights defeated York College, 2-1. Mount Saint Mary improves to 2-1-1 on the season while the Cardinals dropped to 0-3.
As the result of a dangerous cross from the left side, a scrum of players collected in the York 18-yard box, eventually resulting in a foul on the visiting team. Marando approached the penalty slowly and drilled the back of the net to give the Blue Knights a 2-1 advantage.
Marando opened the scoring in the first half, slotting a low shot to the far post. Senior
Paul Zegers (Levittown, N.Y.) made a brilliant feed on the play, sliding a pass diagonally to the middle of the field where Marando took it at full speed.
The Blue Knights would hold on to the one goal advantage into the second half, but it was York's Richard Amponsah who tied the game in the 62nd minute. Amponsah's shot from the top of the box hit the crossbar and then bounced down into the goal before coming back out to the field of play.
Senior goalkeeper
Paul Aries (Nashua, N.H.) collected his second victory of the season, making seven saves in the victory.
Up next for Mount Saint Mary is a non-conference tilt with Centenary College. The Blue Knights will host the Cyclones on Wednesday, September 16 beginning at 8:00 p.m.
