Blue Knights Rout John Jay

NEWBURGH, NY – Responding well from a pair of non-conference losses on Friday, the Mount Saint Mary College softball team swept a double-header with John Jay College on Saturday, winning the first game, 10-5, and the second, 9-1. The Blue Knights improved to 10-21 overall while the Bloodhounds fell to 12-19.

In the first game, it was freshman Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) who carried the Blue Knights with her very hot bat. After a three-run first inning for John Jay, Scott laced a two-run triple over the center fielder's head in the second inning to cut the deficit to one. In the third inning, the freshman smoked a pitch back up the middle for a run-scoring single that made the score 5-3 in favor of the Blue Knights. Then, with the game tied at five in the fifth and with runners on second and third, Scott's single up the middle scored both runners to give the Mount the lead for good.

The Blue Knights scratched out two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score, 10-5. Senior Christina Maiocco (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) went the distance for the Mount, allowing just six hits and one earned run in the seven innings. She collected her second win of the season with the effort.
Scott finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs. Junior Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Her two-run double in the second inning gave the Blue Knights their first lead of the game.

In game two, the Blue Knights struck first with four runs in the third inning. After a pair of John Jay errors, a single by junior Amy Romito (Washingtonville, N.Y.) drove home the first runs of the game and made the score 2-0. Following yet another John Jay error, senior Gabby Torres (Dumont, N.J.) drew a bases loaded walk to force home the third run of the inning. With the bases still loaded, freshman Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.) roped a single to center field to make it 4-0.

The Mount wouldn't let up, tallying three more runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded, sophomore Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) singled down the third base line to bring home the first run of the inning. Then, with two outs, Orender smacked a single to left-center that brought home two more runs.

DelPiano closed the door on the Bloodhounds in the fifth, crushing a two-run double to the gap in left-center that scored a pair of runs. With the score at 9-1, the game was called because of the mercy rule.

DelPiano finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Romito was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Orender and senior Jessica Thibault (Watertown, Conn.) also collected two hits each. Orender had three RBIs and Thibault scored three runs.

Senior Erin Lappe (Goshen, N.Y.) pitched all five innings and collected the win for the Mount. She allowed just five hits and one earned run. She walked three and struck out two.

Up next for the Blue Knights is a vital Skyline Conference double-header with Polytechnic. The Mount needs at least one victory to stay alive in the hunt for the final playoff position. The first pitch is scheduled for noon on Sunday, April 26.
