NEWBURGH, NY – For the second consecutive day, the Mount Saint Mary College softball team split a pair of games with a Skyline Conference opponent. This time, the Blue Knights split with the College of Mount Saint Vincent, winning the first game, 3-0, before losing the second in extra innings, 5-4.
In game one, senior
Erin Lappe (Goshen, N.Y.) went the distance, allowing just eight hits in her second shutout of the weekend. She recorded seven strikeouts.
The Blue Knights did all of their damage in the third inning. After a leadoff double by junior
Liz Carlson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.), freshman
Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.) singled through the left side for an RBI. Senior
Jessica Thibault (Watertown, Conn.) singled to make it runners on first and second. With two outs, junior
Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) doubled into the left-center field gap to score both runs.
Thibault finished 3-for-3, recording half of the team's hits. Orender was 1-for-3 with a run scored and the RBI.
In game two, the Blue Knights scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Carlson's two-triple to right-center scored sophomore
Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) and senior
Gabby Torres (Dumont, N.J.).
With the game tied at three after six innings, Mount Saint Mary used a leadoff double by Orender to seize a 4-3 lead. Orender scored from second on a single up the middle by DelPiano.
The lead would be short-lived, however, with the Dolphins tying the game in the bottom of the inning to force extras. After a scoreless top of the eighth for the Blue Knights, Mount Saint Vincent scored the winning run on a wild pitch and without a hit.
DelPiano was 3-for-3 in the second game with an RBI. Orender and sophomore
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) had two hits apiece.
Mount Saint Mary will host the College of Staten Island on Wednesday, April 22 in a double-header. The first game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
