Blue Knights Earn Split with St. Joseph’s

PATCHOGUE, NY – A five-run first inning boosted the Mount Saint Mary College softball team to a 13-7 victory in the second game of Wednesday's Skyline Conference double-header with St. Joseph's College. The Golden Eagles won the first game, 7-2. The Blue Knights are now 6-15 overall and 3-5 against conference opponents.

Junior Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.), freshman Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.), and freshman Destiny Scott (New Paltz, N.Y.) all recorded RBI singles in the first inning of the second game. The Golden Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the first and then four more in the third to tie the game at five.

In the top of the fourth, junior Amy Romito (Washingtonville, N.Y.) drove in a run and two more runners score by way of an error by the St. Joseph's third baseman.

Leading 9-7 through six innings, the Blue Knights got some much needed insurance in the top of the seventh, rallying for four runs. DelPiano picked up another RBI with a bases loaded walk and sophomore Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) delivered an RBI single to right field that made the score 13-7.

Senior pitcher Erin Lappe (Goshen, N.Y.) entered the game in the third inning and pitched the rest of the way to pick up the victory for the Blue Knights. She allowed five hits and two runs while striking out seven in four-plus innings.

In the first game, Mount Saint Mary recorded just four hits, but it was a disastrous defensive inning that proved to be the difference maker. The Blue Knights made three errors in the fifth inning, allowing the Golden Eagles to score four unearned runs and put the game out of reach. Lappe took the loss, despite allowing just three earned runs in six innings.

Sophomore Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) drove home a run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning and the only other run for the Mount scored on a St. Joseph's error.

Up next for the Blue Knights is a non-conference date with Union College. They'll host the Dutchwomen on Thursday, April 16 with the games scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
