NEWBURGH, NY – In their first weekend of Skyline Conference play, the Mount Saint Mary College softball team went 2-2, dropping a pair of games to Farmingdale on Saturday, but rebounding to take two from Sage on Sunday. The Blue Knights improved to 4-8 overall.
In Saturday's games, the Mount was outslugged and outpitched by Farmingdale (12-2). The Rams won both games by a score of 10-0 and limited the Blue Knights to just four total hits. Sophomores
Jackie Governale (Plainedge, N.Y.) and
Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) had the hits in game one. Governale and senior
Jessica Thibault (Watertown, Conn.) recorded hits in the second game.
On Sunday, the Blue Knights were boosted by a seven-run first inning and cruised to a 16-6 victory in the first game. Junior
Liz Carlson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) delivered the big blow of the first inning, clobbering a triple to left center that scored a pair of runs. Carlson also collected a sacrifice fly in the second inning and finished the first game 3-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. The Blue Knights scored three more runs in the second inning and led 10-2.
After a four-run rally by the Gators in the top of the fourth, the Mount answered with a six-pack in the bottom of the inning. Junior
Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) drove home two with a single to right field. DelPiano was on base in all four of her plate appearances and finished with 2 runs score and 3 RBIs.
Freshman
Danielle Orender (Wall, N.J.) was 3-for-5 with a run and 2 RBIs. Junior
Amy Romito (Washingtonville, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 with a run and 2 RBIs. Senior
Christina Maiocco (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) pitched four innings to collect the win for the Blue Knights.
In game two, senior
Erin Lappe (Goshen, N.Y.) allowed just one run on six hits to lead the Mount to a 5-1 victory. She struck out seven and walked just one.
The Blue Knights pushed across two runs in the second. Senior
Gabby Torres (Dumont, N.J.) came home on a double steal and then Carlson crossed the plate on a single from Orender.
After a leadoff single by Romito in the fifth, Lappe ripped a double down the left field line to help her own cause. The Blue Knights stranded a pair of runners, but would pick up some insurance in the next inning. With two outs, Governale and Romito walked. Freshman
Kyle Meditz (Sound Beach, N.Y.) beat out an infield single that allowed Governale to score and then Lappe roped another single to score Romito.
Romito, Lappe, and Carlson all finished the second game with two hits. Romito scored a pair of runs and Lappe had the 2 RBIs.
The Blue Knights have two days off before their next scheduled contest. They'll host SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday, March 25 in a double-header. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
