PURCHASE, N.Y. – With 0.2 seconds remaining, Mount Saint Mary College junior
Matt Weinberger (Washingtonville, N.Y.) made the second of two free throws to send the Blue Knights to a 55-54 victory over Purchase College on Tuesday evening. The Mount moved to 2-4 overall (1-0 Skyline), while the Panthers fell to 1-3 (0-2 Skyline).
Following a timeout by each team to set up the final play, Weinberger was fouled while attempting a shot from the top of the key. The junior, already 0-for-2 at the line, missed the first before composing himself to drain the second.
Purchase had a shot to win the game in the final two-tenths of a second as a long baseball pass found junior Marvin Billups (Chester, N.Y.) on his way to the basket. A reverse lay-up by Billups rolled off the rim, eliminating any controversy over whether the basket should have counted.
Sophomore
Carlos Valdez (Slate Hill, N.Y.) led the Blue Knights with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Senior
Chris Kingly (Washingtonville, N.Y.) connected on 3-of-4 attempts from behind the arc to finish with 9 points. Junior
Tim Morris (Greenwich, N.Y.) totaled 7 points and 10 boards.
Billups led all scorers with 20 points and also pulled down 7 rebounds. Junior Charles Thompson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) completed a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Both teams struggled to find the range from the floor. Mount Saint Mary shot just 37.3-percent, but still managed to edge Purchase, who shot 35.6-percent. The Panthers were a woeful 0-for-14 from three-point land.
The Blue Knights return home to take on the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Thursday. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
