Martinez No-Hitter Sends Blue Knights Packing

Newburgh, NY - Senior pitcher Jennifer Martinez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) fired a no-hitter on Saturday as the St. Joseph's College softball team defeated Mount Saint Mary College by a score of 1-0. The Golden Eagles improved to 29-6 overall and advance to the championship game against Polytechnic University. The Blue Knights end their season with an overall record of 13-19.

After two scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the third. A lead-off single by Martinez turned into a bases-loaded situation after another single and a walk. Freshman Terri Leonard (Sound Beach, N.Y.) drew another walk to force across Martinez with the eventual winning run.

Martinez went the distance for St. Joseph's, striking out 17 batters in 7 innings. She allowed just one base-runner with a walk to senior Erin Gilmore (Ocean, N.J.) in the fifth inning.

Mount Saint Mary junior Erin Lappe (Goshen, N.Y.) pitched the whole way for the Blue Knights, allowing just the one run while stranding 12 runners on the bases. She struck out five while allowing just five hits in six innings of work. The junior worked out of bases-loaded jams in both the fifth and sixth inning to keep it a one-run game.

Poor weather and field conditions on Friday forced the tournament into single-elimination mode as opposed to the scheduled double-elimination format.
