Extra Inning Win Gives Blue Knights Sweep of Mount Saint Vincent

Newburgh, N.Y. - With an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, Mount Saint Mary sophomore Christine DelPiano (Orange, Conn.) propelled the Blue Knights to a 6-5 victory in game two of Saturday's double-header with Mount Saint Vincent. Mount Saint Mary earned a 4-1 win in a well-played first game to complete the sweep of the Dolphins. The Blue Knights improved to 11-17 overall and to 10-4 inside the Skyline Conference, locking up home field advantage in the first round of next week's playoffs. Mount Saint Vincent dropped to 17-15 overall and to 4-10 in the conference.

Trailing 5-1 headed into the bottom half of the sixth inning of game two, Mount Saint Mary rallied for four runs in the frame to tie the game. Freshman Sarah Johnson (Montgomery, N.Y.) started the rally with a one-out single up the middle, the first of five straight hits for the Blue Knights. Freshman Jackie Governale (Bethpage, N.Y.) followed with a single through the left side that eventually skipped past the left-fielder, allowing Johnson to score from second. Senior Erin Gilmore (Ocean, N.J.) roped the third straight hit with a single through the left side that moved Governale to third. Senior Regina Ammirati (North Babylon, N.Y.) kept the rally going with yet another single, driving home Governale and pushing Gilmore to third. After Ammirati stole second, DelPiano doubled to right-center, driving in both runs and tying the game at five.

After a scoreless seventh and a quick inning for Mount Saint Vincent in the top of the eighth, Governale doubled with one out. Sophomore Carolyn Hunt (Mahopac, N.Y.), pinch-running for Governale, moved to third with the winning run on another single by Gilmore. Ammirati laid down a squeeze bunt, but the Dolphins fielded the ball well, catching Hunt in a pickle between home and third. Now with two outs, DelPiano lofted a pitch to shallow right field where it fell to the ground in a triangle of Mount Saint Vincent players. Gilmore scored easily from second with the winning run to give the Blue Knights the victory and the sweep.

Mount Saint Mary pounded out sixteen hits in the game with four different players recording at least three hits. Governale, Gilmore, and sophomore Tina Ruggiero (Bellerose, N.Y.) all had three hits, while DelPiano finished 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs and the game-winning single.

Junior Erin Lappe (Goshen, N.Y.) went the distance to pick up the victory. She allowed just five hits and no earned runs over the course of eight innings. The junior struck out twelve, her highest total of the season to date.

In the first game, Mount Saint Mary freshman Erin Dammermuth (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) limited the Dolphins to just four hits and one run in seven innings. She struck out four.

Sophomore Liz Carlson (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) led off game one with a triple down the right-field line and scored promptly on a single by Hunt. The Blue Knights doubled their lead in the second as Ammirati scored on an infield single by Dammermuth.

Mount Saint Vincent scratched out a run in the top of the third. Sophomore Lisa O'Shea (White Plains, N.Y.) laced a one-out double to left and then scored on a single up the middle by sophomore Megan Gonzalez (Fishers, Ind.).

After three scoreless innings, senior Colleen Glasheen (Brooklyn, N.Y.) provided the Blue Knights with some much-needed insurance in the sixth. With runners on first and third, Glasheen ripped a double to the right-center field gap that allowed both runs to score, making it 4-1.

Glasheen also had another hit to finish 2-for-3 with the 2 RBIs. Johnson was 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Ammirati was 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.

In between games, the four seniors for Mount Saint Mary were honored with flowers and a small ceremony as they prepared to compete in their final regular season home game. The four seniors on the 2008 team are Erin Gilmore, Colleen Glasheen, Regina Ammirati, and Jen Weiner.

With the pair of victories, the Mount locks up home field advantage in the first round of the Skyline tournament, scheduled to start next Wednesday. Their seed in the tournament will be determined tomorrow in a double-header with Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, N.Y. The start time is set for noon.
