Newburgh, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team earned their first win of the season behind strong performances from senior
Ashley Barnhart (Kingston, N.Y.) and junior
Amanda Carfora (Wallkill, N.Y.). The Blue Knights defeated the College of Staten Island, 3-1, to improve to 1-5 on the young season.
The Mount got out of the gates early with a 30-23 victory in game one of the match. Staten Island would respond nicely though, and stole the second game, 31-29. The Blue Knights closed the door with identical 30-20 margins in the third and fourth games.
Carfora and Barnhart both put up double digits in three separate categories. Carfora finished with 13 kills, 10 aces, and 13 digs to go along with a 0.379 hitting percentage. Barnhart tallied 14 kills, 10 aces, and 11 digs. Sophomore Katie Toole (Wallkill, N.Y.) did a nice job setting up her teammates and finished with 26 assists.
With their first win under their belt, Mount Saint Mary will head to New Paltz to take on the infamously tough competition at the annual SUNY New Paltz Tournament. Play begins on Friday evening.
