Blue Knights Escape With Draw

Newburgh, New York - A shot in the closing seconds of the second overtime from Purchase sophomore Daniel Grabowski-Clark (Farmington, Conn.) trickled just wide of the post, preserving a 1-1 tie between Mount Saint Mary College and Purchase in Skyline Conference men's soccer action. Grabowski-Clark won the ball from an MSMC defender with about thirty seconds to play and looked like he was going to be all alone with the keeper. But the defenders for the Mount hustled back, forcing Grabowski-Clark to rush the shot and push it wide.

The Blue Knights had their own chance to win the game in the closing minutes of regulation. After a blocked shot and a scramble in the box, senior Billy Szabo (Beacon, N.Y.) located the ball and drilled a shot from his waist level. The ball hit solidly on the crossbar and bounced back out into the box, and the Panthers were able to clear to prevent any further chances.

All of the scoring in the game would come during a five minute stretch early in the second half. Senior B.J. Masopust (Wallkill, N.Y.) put the Blue Knights on the board first with an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute. Masopust fired a short angle shot from the left side that hit the goalkeeper's hands and banked into the back netting. Purchase would be quick to find the equalizer though, evening the game at one in the 58th minute. From a cluster of Panthers, Grabowski-Clark was able to head the ball over the outstretched hands of the goalkeeper for the game-tying goal.

Senior goalkeeper Noah Colantuono (Pawling, N.Y.) made nine saves for the Panthers while senior Kyle Reiss (Oxford, N.Y.) made three saves for the Blue Knights. Both keepers were effective at cutting off crossing attempts from the wings.

With the tie, Mount Saint Mary College moved to 5-8-1 on the season, 2-4-1 inside the Skyline Conference. Purchase ran their record to 4-11-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the league. The two teams remain tied for the fifth position in the conference standings.

Up next for the Blue Knights is a trip to Hunter College. The non-conference contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on October 22 in New York, N.Y.
