Rapid Recap
Mount Saint Mary College hosted St. Joseph's Brooklyn as the Knights looked to take down the Bears for the second time this season. Star senior forward
Brianna Guglielmo not only scored first for the Mount, but also led the team in scoring with 22 points this game, to go along with 8 rebounds and 4 steals. Two straight jumpers from
Sara Cashin sparked an 11-0 run for the Knights to put them up 15-4. Guglielmo capped off the quarter with an and-one as they would lead 20-7 after the first period of play.
The Knights continued to dominate in the second quarter, with
Keira Frias knocking down the three on their first possession. Mount Saint Mary led by as much as 22 in the quarter, as
Maggie Trinkaus found an easy layup off a cut to give them a 40-18 lead. They would shoot an immaculate 48.7% from the field in the first half, scoring 20 points in both quarters to start the game.
Coming out of the half, the Mount led 40-25, and the Bears continued off their hot finish to the second quarter with 7 unanswered points to begin the third. St. Joe's quickly cut their deficit to just 4 after being down 22 in the first half, but the Knights would compose themselves. A steal, score, and an-and-one from
Reese Mayer turned the momentum back in the Knights' favor. The Mount scored 13 straight points to help them lead 55-41 at the end of the quarter.
Although Mount Saint Mary's shooting percentage dropped in each quarter, they would shoot 5-11 from deep in the fourth quarter. They did not hit a single shot inside the arc (0-10) in the quarter, but still managed to put up 17 points. Having a lethal shooter like freshman
Gabby Ziegenbalg will help, as she made 4 of the Knights' 9 threes this game, with help from
Keira Frias,
Reese Mayer, and
Ysella Kosic in the fourth. The Bears would not give up, and even outscored the Mount in the fourth, but it would ultimately be too late as Mount Saint Mary defeated St. Joseph's Brooklyn 72-60.
