NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team was bested by New Paltz in their first match of the Hawks Invitational.

Mount Saint Mary played the host New Paltz in the first game of the Hawks Invitational. The Knights had their hands full with the undefeated Hawks squad that only surrendered two sets in the matches.
Ava DiScala had the first point of the match for the Mount, but they did not get off to the hot start they needed to. The Knights went down early, though a
Julianna Simone kill followed by an ace cut their deficit to just one. New Paltz would go on a 6-0 run to jump ahead to take a commanding 17-8 lead. Mount Saint Mary stalled and ended the set allowing 8 unanswered points to lose the first set 25-10.
The Mount started off the second set down 12-2 in the blink of an eye, needing a massive boost to get back into this one. The Knights scored 5 straight to cut the Hawks lead to 14-8, but New Paltz went on another big run to go up 22-8. The Knights were simply just not on their game to start the match and would lose the second set 25-10.
With their backs against the wall, Mount Saint Mary seemed to have woken up in the third set, taking a 5-2 lead thanks to a couple aces from
Erin Lema. The Hawks would score 6 unanswered, but the Knights did not give up. They eventually took back the lead with 3 straight kills from
Jonaiya Williams,
Ava DiScala, and
Nicolette Pirro to go up 15-12. The Knights were rolling and had all but won the set, taking a 22-15 lead. A 10-0 run from New Paltz would stun Mount Saint Mary in the final set as they were swept 3-0 by the Hawks.
