Rapid Recap

From the first whistle, the hosts were aggressive and frequently placed Mount Saint Mary under pressure. Just after the eleven-minute mark, Mount Saint Mary gave up a penalty kick, putting them in an early deficit. With a long-range shot that beat the keeper in the 17th minute, Rutgers-Newark quickly added a second goal as they continued to apply pressure. The Knights were forced into a defensive position due to the lack of rhythm in possession, and Rutgers-Newark capitalized with two additional goals in the 24th and 29th minutes. The Knights were only allowed five shots in the first half and were unable to generate many clear-cut opportunities. A number of promising runs were cut off before they could produce shots, and Mount Saint Mary was behind 4-0 at the break.

With ten shots and a push up the field, Mount Saint Mary almost matched their opponents in offensive output and possession in the second half. Additionally, the defense became more stringent, allowing Rutgers-Newark to add only one more goal. In the last minute of play, Mount Saint Mary continued to battle despite still being down. After a deft assist from Emma Mihale, first-year midfielder Evie Dowd scored her first career goal to put the Knights on the board and end the game on a high note. The Knights head into conference play looking to turn their season around after a tough non-conference schedule.
