Rapid Recap
(Game 1)
Mount Saint Mary traveled down to Pearl, Mississippi to take on Belhaven University in their first season series. In the top of the 1st,
Christian Parisa got his first of two hits as a Knight.
Liam Horan got the start for the Mount on the rubber, as he has been one of the team's top pitchers since his freshman year. The Blazers got on the board in the bottom of the 1st after capitalizing on two batters reaching base from being hit by a pitch. The Knights pitchers struggled with their control walking and hitting a total of 18 batters in game one. Belhaven extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the 2nd, walking twice with bases loaded. Mount Saint Mary was able to tie things up in the 3rd, starting with
Luke Barone securing a fielder's choice.
Aidan Marshall recorded an RBI by reaching first on an error followed by
Tyler Crocitto hitting a sacrifice fly to score Barone.
The Knights weren't able to get much going offensively the next few innings, but the Mount's pitching tightened up.
John Morehead entered the game in relief, and though he walked two batters, would not give up a hit or run in 1.1 innings pitched with 2 strikeouts. In the top of the 6th,
Chris Calvario loaded up the bases with a single, but an ensuing double play stopped the Knights from gaining the lead.
Dale Beneway recorded back-to-back 1-2-3 innings as we were tied 3-3 after 6 innings.
With 2 outs in the 7th, the Blazers managed to load the bases and break the tie. Belhaven scored 4 runs as the Knights' walking troubles finally caught up to them. Mount Saint Mary was unable to reach base in the 8th or 9th innings as Belhaven walked away with the first game of the series 7-3.
Notes and Numbers
(Game 2)
The Knights got started off in the top of the 1st with a walk then a single from
Christian Parisa.
Tyler Van De Bogart knocked in a run with a double as the Mount led 1-0. In the bottom half of the inning, the team struggled mightily as Belhaven scored 6 runs without recording an out before the weather put us in a rain delay. The game would resume the following day with the Knights trailing 7-1 after the 1st. The Blazers would notch 4 more runs the following innings taking an 11-1 lead.
Frank Signorelli, the only man to reach home plate for Mount Saint Mary this game, scored off a sacrifice fly from
Luke Barone, who had 2 of the team's 3 RBIs.
Belhaven continued to unload on the Knight's pitching staff, scoring another 6 runs in the fourth inning to make the score 23-2. Barone singled to center field to drive in Signorelli, but that would be all she wrote for the Mount as they dropped their second game of the series to the Blazers 27-3 in 7 innings due to the mercy run rule in college baseball.
