Rapid Recap
Mount Saint Mary traveled down to Caguas, Puerto Rico, this winter break to play in the Puerto Rico Clasico, with their first match being against the University of Redlands. The Knights did not get off to the best start, not making their first bucket until
Ysella Kosic knocked down a three with 4:03 left in the quarter. They were playing a formidable Bulldogs squad that has only lost one game so far this year.
Keira Frias would follow up with a three of her own, then Kosic would knock down a couple of free throws, but the Knights trailed 25-8 after the first quarter.
The Knights struggled once again to begin the second quarter and could not find an answer to the Redlands defense.
Sara Cashin, who was the Mount's leading scorer this match, was aggressive in the quarter, drawing multiple fouls and getting to the free-throw line. She would also have two of the team's three made baskets in the quarter, as the shot just 25.5% from the field this game. Heading into the half, the Knights found themselves trailing 43-18.
To begin the third quarter,
Sara Cashin would get a quick bucket; however, just like the first half, the Knights were unable to score consistently.
Darcy DeBenedittis got a good look on the fast break for her first points of the match and broke a Mount Saint Mary scoring drought. The Mount was outscored 24-6 in the quarter, as they trailed 67-24 heading into the fourth.
Jaelynn Walker had a big fourth quarter for the Knights, scoring 7 straight points for the team, as part of a season-high scoring performance for the freshman forward. Another freshman,
Ysella Kosic, would also record a season-high 7 points on the afternoon for the Knights. The Mount would turn the ball over 22 times this game, against a Bulldogs team that prides themselves in protecting the ball, as they have the fewest recorded turnovers in Division III. Mount Saint Mary would lose this match with the University of Redlands 90-34.
