Rapid Recap
The Knights were looking to make some noise in their home opener against Western Connecticut State after dropping their first three matches of the season. Things did not start off as planned for Mount Saint Mary as they went down 6-1 early. The Knights tried to gain their footing after a block from both
Brooke Lavelle and
Julianna Simone to bring the set to within four points. They could never seem to get in rhythm as the Wolves would outscore the Knights 12-2 to close out the first set 25-7.
The first set did not foreshadow the second set as the Mount came out a different team, playing the best set they've played all season. Both teams went back and forth, exchanging leads until
Sofia Fredericks assisted on a
Jonaiya Williams kill, followed by a Williams ace, then a
Julianna Simone kill to give the Knights a 12-10 lead. WestConn went on a minor run, but Mount Saint Mary did not back down and took the lead back 15-14 thanks to a couple of good services by
Isabella Montemagno. Neither team was willing to give in until it seemed like the Knights were going to win the set after going up 23-20. The Wolves tied things back up and we eventually entered the win by two scenario after both teams had 25 points apiece. The set ended up swinging in WestConn's favor and the Wolves took the second set 28-26.
The third set started off fine for Mount Saint Mary as they responded with a duo of kills after being down 3-0. An ensuing service error snowballed a 13-0 run for WestConn as this deflated the Knights moving forward.
Emma Wetzel ended the run with a kill for the Knights in hopes of making a comeback. That wasn't the case, as the Wolves finished the set with ease, winning the set by a score of 25-5 and the match 3-0.
