Rapid Recap
In the first match of the Hawk Invitational, Mount Saint Mary played the host team, the SUNY New Paltz Hawks. Both teams came into this match hungry, as neither squad had yet to record a win on the season. The Knights came out strong, scoring four straight points to take a 4-1 lead off a
Julianna Simone ace. New Paltz was able to go on a small run of their own to take the lead, but the Mount responded. The Hawks and Knights exchanged blows, going back and forth until a couple of bad sets gave Mount Saint Mary an 11-9 lead. A
Sofia Fredericks kill ignited a Knight run to give them a six-point lead to go up 17-11 over the Hawks. The Mount could smell blood in the water, but could not take advantage, as the Hawks eventually tied things up at 20. The Knights showed composure in the clutch and scored five of the last six points of the set to close out their first set win this season 25-21.
New Paltz was no stranger to being down, so the Knights could not take their foot off the gas. The opening of the second set was tight until three straight Hawks mistakes gave Mount Saint Mary an 11-8 lead. New Paltz was able to catch the Knights sleeping and went on a 10-0 run to take a big 21-13 lead. Junior outside hitter
Jonaiya Williams sparked a little something for the Knights with a kill as they were able to bring the score to within four. The set stalled there for the Mount as New Paltz finished things off to win the second set 25-17.
Mount Saint Mary got off to a slow start in the third set as the Hawks jumped out to a 14-5 lead. The Knights were able to take advantage of some sloppy play by New Paltz, slowly chipping away at their lead until the score was 17-13. The Hawks would wake back up and attempt to pull away with the third set. The Knights finally succumbed to their deficit and New Paltz would end up winning the third set 25-17 and take the lead in the match 2-1.
The fourth set was win or go home for the Knights. They weren't able to execute early as the Hawks went up 10-1 early on. Mount Saint Mary did not go down without a fight and answered the call. A 7-0 run for the Knights brought them back into the match and an
Erin Lema Kill assisted by
Aubriana Boyce created the opportunity for the Mount to tie the set up 13-13. The Knights would only score three more points for the remainder of the set as New Paltz caught fire to win the fourth and final set 25-16.
