Athletics Announces Five Key Personnel Changes

NEWBURGH, NY – On Monday afternoon, Director of Athletics Shane Bell announced some key personnel changes in the Athletic Department.

Sam Howe is now the Associate Athletic Director while retaining her role as Senior Woman Administrator. Howe will be responsible for purchasing, equipment, scheduling, game contracts, working with fundraising and alumni relations, and oversee Sports Information. She will also be the Sports Administrator for softball, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's lacrosse, cheerleading, and eSports.

Howe was previously the head softball coach of the Knights for seven seasons, where she led them to a 92-91-1 record with an impressive 63-25 record in conference play, including a Skyline Conference Championship in 2018.

"After many rewarding years in softball, it's bittersweet to step away from a role that has brought me so much joy and fulfillment. However, I am thankful to Athletic Director Shane Bell for allowing me to embrace the new challenge as the Associate Athletic Director. This new chapter offers me the chance to support and lead our athletic programs in a broader capacity, and I look forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead."

Mike Lowell becomes the Assistant Athletic Director, while also retaining his role as the head women's lacrosse coach and SAAC Advisor. Lowell will be responsible for compliance and oversee the men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's cross country and track and field, and women's volleyball programs.

In six seasons as the head coach, Lowell has a 27-44 record with an 11-25 record in conference play. This past season, the Knights went 10-6 winning their most games since 2013 and Lowell won both Skyline Conference and ECAC Coach of the Year. In 2022, he led the team to its first winning season since 2014 with an 8-7 record.

"I want to thank Shane Bell for giving me this opportunity to work on his administrative staff. I look forward to being part of the growth of Mount athletics and working with all our amazing student athletes."

"Sam and Mike are two of the greatest ambassadors of Mount Saint Mary College and MSMC Athletics," said Athletic Director Shane Bell. "Since I arrived, they have continuously impressed me with their dedication and commitment to our student-athletes and their passion for elevating our department. I am excited to see Sam and Mike embrace these new roles and continue to help elevate MSMC Athletics as we strive for academic and athletic excellence."

Lorne Marcus will take over as the new head cross country and track and field coach. From 2008 to 2019, he served as Assistant Athletic Director and head track and field coach at St. Thomas Aquinas College, garnering multiple Coach of the Year awards and guiding over 10 athletes to All-American status. His recent role as Assistant Athletic Director and head XC/track coach at St. Thomas University further exemplifies his commitment to excellence, achieving notable successes such as multiple All-Americans and conference standings.

"Lorne brings over 15 years of head coaching experience to the MSMC track & field and cross country programs.  In his time at the Mount, Lorne has shown his commitment to our student-athletes, and I look forward to him leading our Track & Field and cross country programs to new heights," said Bell.

Kyle Teixeira is the new Director of Sports Information. Teixeira brings experience from Merrimack College, where he worked as an athletic communications graduate assistant, and at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. At Lowell, he worked as an athletic communications assistant and assistant data/video analyst for the men's ice hockey team during his senior year.

Teixeira graduated from UMass Lowell in May of 2023 receiving his bachelor's in management information systems and marketing. He earned his master's in communication from Merrimack this past May.

Nick Sume joined the sports medicine staff at Mount Saint Mary College as an Assistant Athletic Trainer. Sume is a Board of Certification Certified Athletic Trainer and is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association.

Sume earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Marist College in 2024. During his time at Marist, Sume gained clinical experience with Bard, Vassar, and Marist College sports teams. In previous years, Sume has volunteered for the New York City and Boston Marathons.

"The MSMC Athletics Department became stronger with the hiring of Kyle and Nick as our new Director of Sports Information and Assistant Athletic Trainer, respectively," added Bell. Kyle brings a wealth of experience from Division I and he has already helped revolutionize and streamline our Sports Information department. The addition of Nick to our Athletic Training staff is going to help us elevate the student-athlete experience and provide them with the care they need both in-season and out of season. Welcome to the team!"
