Newburgh, NY– In a dramatic display of unwavering determination, the Mount Saint Mary College Knights rallied from a significant deficit in game two of their home doubleheader against the SUNY Maritime Privateers. Despite ultimately facing defeat in both games, the Knights showcased their fighting spirit and offensive spark.
Game 1: Knights Held in Check
The first game was a tough battle for the Mount. SUNY Maritime's pitching proved dominant, limiting the Knights' offense throughout the contest. The Knights managed just one run and three hits across seven innings. Errors also contributed to the Knights' struggles, with a total of three throughout the game.
Game 2: Heart-Pounding Comeback
Game two unfolded in exhilarating fashion. After falling behind 10-0, the Knights unleashed a stunning offensive surge in the bottom of the fourth inning. Fueled by a solo home run by Tyler Crocitto, the Knights exploded for seven runs, bringing the score to 10-7 and electrifying the home crowd Batting around the order, the Mount seemed to find their grove at the plate, and the energy in the dugout helped pick up the home crowd.
The momentum shifted back and forth, with both teams exchanging runs in a fierce battle between the batters and the pitchers. The Knights mounted another impressive rally in the bottom of the 6th inning which tied the game. With the bases loaded, William Reese Kelly had a huge double that brought around Kaleb Mogan, Shane Finch and Richard Lamping to score. The Privateers scored three runs over the next two innings taking back the lead, but the Knights wouldn't go down that easily. They battled back 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th to make it 13-12. Unfortunately, despite their valiant efforts, they ultimately fell short with a final score of 19-12.
Knights' Standout Performances
- Tyler Crocitto: Ignited the comeback with a home run, adding three RBIs, and a walk.
- Kaleb Morgan: Demonstrated consistency at the plate with three hits and an RBI.
- Justin Stella: Drove in two runs with a two-hit performance.
- William Reese Kelly: Contributed a double and three RBIs while also getting hit by a pitch.
- Joseph Lembo: Added one hits, two RBIs, and a stolen base.
Coach Purcell's Reflection
"I was very happy with the way we fought back in game 2 today," said Mount Saint Mary's head coach Trevor Purcell. "The boys showed a lot of heart and grit. We didn't win the game but we definitely can take some positives from the loss. It's a long season and we need to keep playing hard. I fully expect them to rebound on Wednesday."
