Rapid Recap
Mount Saint Mary had a tough road ahead as they traveled to Misericordia University in Dallas, Pennsylvania for a tri-match event. Their first match was against Mount Aloysius College, in which the Knights fell down 7-0 early. They tried to get back into the set with kills from
Jonaiya Williams and
Julianna Simone, but they weren't able to get any closer than within five points. A 9-0 run for Mount Aloysius would be too much for the Knights to overcome as they fell 25-13 in the first set.
Mount Saint Mary bounced back in a crazy second set, as both squads exchanged leads until Mount Aloysius was able to take a 14-11 lead. The Knights responded with a crucial 6-1 run late in the set that included three kills from
Jonaiya Williams to make the score 22-21 MSMC. We would eventually enter the win-by-two scenario, where each team teetered on victory on multiple occasions. After being down 31-30, the Knights would prevail with a 4-1 run to close out the second set 34-32 to tie the match up 1-1.
The third set would be all Mount Aloysius as they scored seven of the first eight points.
Ava DiScala,
Sofia Fredericks, and
Mackenzie Warmoth all tried to provide some offense for Mount Saint Mary, but they could never get into a groove. A 9-1 run for Mount Aloysius gave them a 16-point lead and allowed them to secure the match point and the set 25-10.
The Knights continued to have some trouble early on in sets, as they went down 7-2 in the fourth set. They fought their way back in with a kill from
Brooke Lavelle, then an ace from
Isabella Israel. After bringing the score to within two, Mount Aloysius began to pull away again to make it 18-11. A small run for the Knights made the deficit only three, but they could not hold on to the momentum as Mount Aloysius won the fourth and final set 25-19.
The Mount had a small break before having to return to action and face Misericordia for another battle. Mount Saint Mary started off strong, tying the match up at 8-8 before starting to fizzle out. The Cougars scored nine unanswered points to build themselves a solid lead. The Knights could not bundle together more than two points in a row, causing them to lose the first set 25-13.
The start to the second set was much different, as you could see the fatigue start to play a factor. Misericordia went up 10-2 before an
Ava DiScala Kill finally gave the Knights some points since the opening rally. The Mount just could not formulate any sort of run. Trading points with the Cougars at this point in the set was no help as the Knights lost the second set 25-13.
Mount Saint Mary needed a strong performance in the third set to stay alive. After going down 7-1 to start, the Knights bounced back with a kill and a couple of aces from
Jonaiya Williams to bring them to within two. They continued to hang around, but simply could not find that spark needed to gain the lead. A 7-1 run for the Cougars would be the ultimate fall for the Mount as they lost the third and final set 25-14.
