Rapid Recap
Mount Saint Mary is coming off a home tri-match in which they dropped both their games in three sets. They looked to take their frustrations out on St. Joseph's Brooklyn and did just that. The first set started off in favor of the Bears as they went up 4-0. The Mount responded and tied the game up with a
Jonaiya Williams kill, who had yet another stellar day on the court. Each squad traded three then two-point swings to tie the set up 10-10. The reigning Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week
Julianna Simone and
Brooke Lavelle gave the Knights a 14-12 lead with a kill apiece. After securing the lead, the Knights didn't look back, although St. Joseph's still hung around to the very end. On game point, a
Sofia Fredericks kill assisted by
Erin Lema. closed out the set 25-23 and put Mount Saint Mary up one. Lema put on a defensive masterclass with a career-high 20 digs tonight after making the switch to Libero less than a week ago.
The second set was pure domination from the Knights and by far their best set of the season. They forced the Bears to make lots of mistakes and did a great job setting each other up on the offensive end. Mount Saint Mary scored 16 of the first 20 points in the set to take a commanding 16-4 lead. The Knights continued to put a beating on the Bears as
Ava Robles finished the set with a service ace to win the second set 25-6.
The match was far from over as the Mount still had to win a third set before going home.
Sofia Fredericks set up
Jonaiya Williams and Ava Discala to get the Knights going. Mount Saint Mary had a 9-5 lead early on in the set, but St. Joseph's responded to tie the set 11-11. The Knights took back the lead for a little while until a 5-0 run gave the Bears a 21-19 lead. The Mount struggled last Saturday to close out sets but clearly made that an emphasis of focus in practice.
Julianna Simone tied the match up at 22-22 with one of her 10 kills on the night. On match point who else but
Jonaiya Williams got the set and game-winning kill to walk out with a 25-23 third-set victory.
