Rapid Recap
Mount Saint Mary hosted their first tri-match of the season today, playing St. Joseph's Long Island in the early slot to start the day. The Knights came out hot, scoring the first six points of the match with kills from
Julianna Simone and
Emma Wetzel. The Golden Eagles would slowly but surely make their way back into the set tying it at 15-15. Four straight points for the Mount gave them a comfortable lead until St. Joe's rallied back to take the lead with seven unanswered points. A
Jonaiya Williams kill followed by a few mistakes from the Golden Eagles had the match tied 24-24. The Knights were unable to close out the set as they lost the first set 26-24.
The second set was tight to start, as
Brooke Lavelle had one of her six blocks in the match to give Mount Saint Mary a 5-4 lead. St. Joe's controlled the lead for most of the set from here on out. The Knights did cut the lead to four after a 7-1 run, but it was too little too late as the Golden Eagles took a 2-0 advantage after winning the second set 25-18.
Set number three did not take off like the Knights had hoped. Down 9-3 early, and as much as seven points in the set, Mount Saint Mary was able to come back as a
Sofia Fredericks ace made it 15-13 St. Joe's. Moments later,
Allie Kenney would go on a service run that saw an ace and an
Ava DiScala kill tying this one up at 20-20. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles scored the next five points, completing the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
With some time off, the Knights were refreshed and feeling confident in their last match against King's College. The Monarchs had just defeated St. Joe's 3-0 and were playing the Knights in a back-to-back.
Jonaiya Williams and
Sofia Fredericks got going early, as Williams had a game-high 16 kills and Fredericks shattered her career-high with 34 assists. The Mount opened up with a 10-7 lead after a
Julianna Simone ace, but they knew how good of a team King's was and they were not going anywhere. Midway through the set, it was 13-13 until a 5-0 run from the Monarchs gave them an 18-13 lead. The Knights responded with a 5-0 run of their own that included points from five different players;
Jonaiya Williams,
Brooke Lavelle,
Isabella Israel,
Emma Wetzel, and
Julianna Simone. This set came down to the wire with both teams on their heels. Just like the first match, Mount Saint Mary could not close out sets as they fell 25-22 in the first set.
Unfazed, the Knights continued to battle going into the second set. The squads traded leads with neither leading by more than three until later in the set. After leading 11-10, the Knights would allow the Monarchs to score 10 of the next 13 points and take a 20-14 advantage. At match point, the Mount started a small rally to bring the set to within three, but came up short losing the second set 2-0.
Although Mount Saint Mary was playing very well, they would need to play even better if they were to avoid two straight sweeps on the day. The Knights trailed 10-5 early on, bouncing back to take a 12-11 lead after four straight kills from different players.
Jonaiya Williams was a force on the floor this match, obliterating almost every ball she hit. She would be a huge form of offense for the Mount as they hung around and even took a 21-20 lead late in the set. End-of-set struggles was the theme today as the Monarchs went on a 5-1 run to finish the set 25-22 as King's College would win the match 3-0.
