Knights Battle Past St. Joseph's Brooklyn In Tough Matchup

Newburgh, NY- The second half of Skyline Conference play is here and the Mount Saint Mary Women's Basketball team (12-5, 11-1 Skyline) has continued their winning ways. They have been a team to beat this season and continue to rank among the top of the conference. Tonight the Knights had a slower start than usual but they kept their heads high. The Bears from St. Joe's Brooklyn (3-14, 2-10 Skyline) came out hot in the first quarter and went 70 percent behind the arch to take a short-lived lead. But a strong offensive burst in the second quarter was all the Knights needed to get the lead. They earned  another win in conference play tonight with a score of 86 to 66.

The Knights biggest strength tonight was their ability to crash the boards offensively. Coach Dietz explained that she never doubted her team and knew that they would pick up their tempo quickly and find their rhythm. She also said "Offensively we were great tonight. We took the right shots and played quick when we had the chance. Our passing tonight was good as well, it was a great team win!"

Senior Charlotte Twohig had another big night. Twohig led all scorers with 23 points and 3 rebounds. Defensively Twohig had her eyes locked on the ball and contributed five steals to the win. Twohig said "We executed really well tonight even though we started slow. As a team we always looked for the next pass to get the best scoring opportunity." Twohig has continued to have strong performances in each game this season.

Juniors Ciarra Quinn, Casey Love, and Lauren Petrie have continued to lead the Knights with strong numbers every game. Love contributed seven points and was strong on the boards with nine rebounds. Petrie added 12 points, with 6 of those points coming from behind the arch. Ciarra Quinn was strong on the boards with 10 rebounds today while also contributing 4 points. Sophomore Brianna Guglielmo added 14 points and 4 assists to tonight's win but also was big on the boards adding 11 rebounds.

The Knights have proved that they have depth on their bench. Tonight the bench added 26 points to the team's win. 20 of these points came from Shannon Phelan who went 4 for 4 behind the three point line and was 66% from field goal range. Phelan also contributed big defensively with 9 rebounds and 1 steal.

Looking forward the Knights hope to continue their winning ways as they take on St. Joseph's Long Island on Saturday at 1pm. Come out and support the team as they celebrate the Class of 2024 before the game!
