Newburgh, NY- The energy was high surrounding the start of the Women's Soccer 2023 season, and with the weather in full cooperation tonight, there was no better way to kick things off. As the Knights took the field they brought high pressure to the NYU Violets in the middle third of the field. While the first half didn't show it on the scoreline, the Knights showed moments of offensive brilliance, capitalizing on quick transitions through the middle third and pressing the back line of the NYU defense. Mount Saint Mary's defense, led by Senior Goalkeeper
Christina Kakavas, found themselves repelling the repeated offensive attacks by NYU. Kakavas recorded 14 saves on the night, with many more plays that shutdown the attack before shots could come.
During halftime, coach Chris Lyn, made the right changes. The team held the Violets to a single goal and brought their own offensive chances to the NYU net. Connections were developed much better in the second half through the midfield. The teams ability to transition out of the defense and press the ball through to the final third improved as the game went on, which allowed
Lily Tanko to attack the net and force the NYU keeper to earn each save.
The final score for the evening favored the women from NYU 0-7. The Knights will look to rebound from tonight, next week, when they travel to Ithaca to take on the Bombers Wednesday, September 6th at 4pm.
