Knights Drop Non-Conference Decision At Cortland

Five different Knights record a hit

Cortland, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team was back on the diamond Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Cortland and dropping an 11-1 non-conference decision. Five different Knights finished the game with a hit, including Tyler Crocitto (Staten Island, N.Y.) who drove in the team's lone run.
 
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 11-25 overall on the season, while Cortland, who was receiving votes in the latest national top-25 poll, wins its fourth straight game and improves to 27-9 overall on the season.
 
How It Happened
  • Cortland broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning with its first three runs of the game.
  • With two runners on and one-out in the fourth, Dylan Maackenzie drove a three-run home run out to left field for all the scoring the Red Dragons would need in the game.
  • Cortland went on to score seven runs in the fifth inning to break open an 10-0 advantage.
  • With the bases loaded and one-out in the fifth, Mackenzie went deep again, clubbing a grand slam out down the left field line.
  • The Red Dragons tacked on their final run in the sixth inning Dylan Tierney laced a one-out run scoring double to right center field.
  • Mount Saint Mary got on the board with its only run of the game in the top of the eighth after stringing together three hits in the inning.
  • Daniel Mack (Ramsey, N.J.) and Frederick Ocasio (Monroe, N.Y.) singled to put two runners on with one out in the inning.
  • After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Crocitto reached on an infield single to deliver Mack and close out the scoring in the game.
 
For The Knights
  • Crocitto finished the contest 1-for-4 with an RBI, his third run driven in of the season.
  • Mack went 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
  • Ocasio, Noah Anderson (Watervliet, N.Y.) and Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) each finished with a single.
  • Ryan Lockhart (Monroe Township, N.J.) made the start and suffered the loss, allowing three runs on five hits in 4.0 innings.
  • Joseph Vernaglia (Mahwah, N.J.) and Nick Torres (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) each worked a scoreless inning of relief and picked up a strikeout.
 
For The Red Dragons
  • Mackenzie closed a big day at the plate 2-for-3 with two home runs, two runs scored and seven RBI.
  • Chris Bonacci went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Matthew Krafft finished the win 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Adam Mieczkowski wrapped up the game 1-for-1 with two walks, three runs scored and an RBI.
  • Will McCarthy picked up his sixth win of the season on the mound after working 5.0 shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.
  • James Capozzi struck out the side in the ninth to finish the victory.
 
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary returns to Skyline Conference play with a trip to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Saturday.
  • Cortland hosts the University of Scranton on Wednesday afternoon.
