Knights Cruise Past Panthers In Skyline Opener

Travers posts seven points, Frank totals four assists

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team opened up Skyline Conference play Wednesday night with a 15-5 victory over SUNY Purchase, snapping their four-game losing streak and seeing nine different players score. Mike Travers (Staten Island, N.Y.) led the way offensively for the Knights, scoring a season high four goals and dishing out a season high three assists.

Wednesday's victory pushes Mount Saint Mary to 3-4 overall on the season and 1-0 in conference play, while Purchase falls to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the Skyline. 

How it Happened
  • A strong start by the Mount in the first quarter led them to score four of the five goals in the period, including the first three of the game.
  • Travers got the scoring started with his seventh goal of the season assisted by sophomore Larry Frank (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Ryan Olmstead (Millbrook, N.Y.) followed it up with two scores of his own, pushing the Knights lead to 3-0 in the first stanza.
  • Purchase scored its lone goal of the first on an Angus Goldman goal with 1:12 left in the quarter, only to be followed up nine seconds later with another Travers goal delivered from Frank.
  • A tightly contested second quarter saw each team score twice, trading goals back and forth to keep the game tight going into the half.
  • Joe Ely and Olmestead each traded goals to start the second frame, marking Olmstead's third goal of the half. Ely scored his second goal of the quarter with 7:15 left before Xavier Rodriguez (Hackettstown, N.J.)  answered with his fourth goal of the season, marking the score at 6-3 going into halftime.
  • The Knights would cruise to victory in the second half, outscoring Purchase nine to two the rest of the contest.
  • Setting the tone to start the third period, the Knights had three straight scores. Maxwell Green Wright (Central Islip, N.Y.) started it off with a man-up goal assisted by Rodriguez, followed by a Travers score and Sal Gallucci (Massapequa, N.Y.) goal to push the lead to 9-3.
  • Purchase found their only goal of the third period on a Christian Ishoo tally to try and keep the Panthers within striking distance. The game then went scoreless for six minutes before a Joe Keating (Pleasantville, N.Y.) goal to end the third period, pushing the score to 10-4 headed to the final frame.
  • The final quarter was all Knights, scoring five out of the six goals scored in the frame.
  • Joseph Angelillo (Pompton Plains, N.J.) scored his first goal of the season on a highlight reel play to start the fourth quarter, and Travers followed him up soon after with another tally of his own.
  • With scoring at a premium for the Panthers, they scored their final goal of the game with 4:43 left in the frame after a Rodriguez goal, marking g the score at 13-5.
  • The Knights would add two more players to the scoring column to end the game, with Mathew Esposito (Manorville, N.Y.)  scoring his first goal of the season on a Green Wright assist, and Frank picking up his eighth goal of the season to finish off the game.
 
For The Knights
  • Nine different players entered the scoring column for the Mount.
  • Travers posted his first multi-goal game of the season, scoring a season high four goals, assisting on three other scores, and posting a team high seven points.
  • Olmstead connected on three goals, secured a season high five groundballs and caused two miscues.  
  • Rodriguez was the last of three Knights to score multiple goals, connecting for two goals and assisted on one other goal.
  • Angelillo scored his first goal of the season, picked up one groundball and caused one turnover.
  • Frank picked up a team high four assists, scored one goal, and scooped up five groundballs.
  • Anthony Paggiotta (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) won fourteen faceoffs, and picked up a team high seven groundballs.
  • Esposito connected on his first goal of the season, picked up two groundballs and caused two turnovers.
  • Green Wright tallied one and assisted on two other goals.
  • Gallucci and Keating scored a goal apiece.
  •  Kenny Leen (Miller Place, N.Y.) earned the win in goal, turning back fourteen shots.
For The Panthers
  • Ely led the way with two goals, three groundballs and two caused turnovers.
  • Angus Goldman tallied one goal, one assist and picked up two groundballs.
  • Ishoo and Ayotunde Otuyelu each added a goal apiece for the Panthers.
  • Soleil Gaines scooped up a team high six groundballs.
  • Shakim Carr picked up three groundballs and caused two turnovers. 
Game Statistics
  • The game ended in a tie for shots attempted for each team at 32-32.
  • Groundballs went to the Knights 32-30.
  • Mount Saint Mary held a 14-8 advantage in faceoffs.
  • The Knights went 20-24 in clearing chances and the Panthers went 17-19.
  • Mount Saint Mary took advantage of extra man opportunities, going 4-6.
