Baseball Drops Two To St. Joseph’s-L.I.

Franco totals three hits, Gregory works complete game in game two

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team returned to Skyline Conference play on Sunday and dropped a pair of games to St. Joseph's-L.I., falling 7-3 and 6-1 to the Golden Eagles. Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) totaled three hits over the two games and Brian Gregory (Florida, N.Y.) worked a complete game on the mound in game two.
 
Sunday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 5-13 overall on the season and to 2-2 in league play while the Golden Eagles improves to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in conference action.

How It Happened
  • The Knights were limited to just one hit in the opener, a Franco single in the seventh inning.
  • St. Joseph's starter Jack Kelly took a perfect game into the sixth inning and faced the minimum heading into the seventh.
  • The Golden Eagles got on the board in the first when Ryan Decoursey shot a run scoring single through the left side.
  • St. Joseph's added two runs in both the second and third frames to open a 5-0 advantage.
  • DeCoursey drove in a run with a double in the third and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • The lead ballooned to 7-0 in the sixth when James Maggio delivered the Golden Eagles' final two runs with a single.
  • Mount Saint Mary got on the board in their final at-bat after Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on Franco's single.
  • Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.) was hit with a pitch to load the bases ahead of run scoring walks from Aidan Marshall (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Coleman Barnes (New Hampton, N.Y).
  • Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) drove in the game's final run with a sacrifice fly that pushed home Nolasco.
 
For The Knights
  • Franco finished game one 1-for-3 with a run scored.
  • Goodwin, Marshall, Barnes and Robert Brust (Shirly, N.Y.) all drew walks.
  • Goodwin and Nolasco each scored a run.
  • Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) suffered the loss on the mound, working 6.0 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits.
  • John Morehead (Highland Mills, N.Y.) worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Knights.

How It Happened
  • The Golden Eagles broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.
  • Joe Sanguedolce singled home Decoursey with the inning's first run before a three-run home run from Phillip Krpata gave the visitors the four-run cushion.
  • St. Joseph's tacked on a run in the sixth on a Maggio solo home run to build a 5-0 lead.
  • Mount Saint Mary got its run in the eighth inning following a lead-off triple from Brust.
  • With runners on the corners and one-out, Franco singled to center to cut the Mount's deficit to 5-1.
  • The Golden Eagles got the run right back in the ninth on a Nick Vicino run scoring single to close out the scoring in the game.
 
For The Knights
  • Franco and Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) each went 2-for-4 in game two with Franco driving in the team's lone run.
  • Goodwin finished with a hit and a walk for the Mount.
  • Brust tripled and scored the team's only run.
  • Barnes ripped a double.
  • Merlin and Marshall each finished game two with a single.
  • Gregory worked 9.0 innings for the Mount, surrendering five earned runs on 11 hits.
 
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary is back in action at home on Monday when it hosts the College of Mount Saint Vincent in a conference doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
