Knights Topple Manhattanville; Travers Sets Single Game Goal Records

Travers nets nine goals on Senior Day

Newburgh, N.Y. – Senior Mike Travers (Staten Island, N.Y.) set a single game program record with nine goals with Xavier Rodriguez (Hackettstown, N.J.) and Nick Gurello (Selden, N.Y.) each totaling five points as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team posted a 15-7 Senior Day victory over Manhattanville Sunday afternoon.
 
Sunday's win pulls Mount Saint Mary to within a game of the .500 mark overall at 4-5 and pushes its league record at 2-1. Manhattanville slips to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in Skyline Conference play.
 
How It Happened
  • Travers opened the scoring in the game with a man-up tally at the 8:32 mark of the first quarter and Gurello scored just over four minutes later to give the Mount a 2-0 advantage.
  • Manhattanville got its only goal of the opening 30 minutes when Drew Palladino tallied with 2:41 left in the opening frame.
  • After being held to two goals in the first frame, the Knights outscored the Valiants 5-0 heading into halftime.
  • Travers scored three straight goals over the first 9:39 of the second stanza to push the Knights in front 5-1.
  • Ryan Olmstead (Millbrook, N.Y.) and Rodriguez added man-up tallies in the final five minutes of the half to send the Knights into the intermission with a 7-1 advantage.
  • Coming out of halftime, the Valiants put together a three-goal run to pull to within 7-4 with 8:26 left in the third quarter.
  • Rodriguez stopped the run with a goal at the 5:33 mark before Manhattanville cut its deficit to 8-6 with back-to-back goals from Jesse McGrath and Tyler Berch.
  • After the visitors pulled to within two goals, the Mount ripped off six straight goals, including four from Travers, to spread the lead to 14-6.
  • Travers tied the single game record with his eighth goal off a feed from Gurello at the 5:42 mark of the final period and set the new standard with his ninth of the game, again finishing an assist from Gurello, in the closing seconds of the fourth period.
 
For The Knights
  • Travers, who entered the game with 11 goals, now sits atop the team leaderboard in goals with 20 and points with 30. Travers finished off Sunday's victory with a pair of groundballs.
  • Rodriguez scored three times and recorded two assists to go along with a groundball.
  • Gurello scored once and assisted on four goals, adding a caused turnover.
  • Larry Frank (Staten Island, N.Y.) assisted on three goals.
  • Olmstead and Sal Gallucci (Massapequa, N.Y.) each posted a goal and an assist.
  • Joseph Angelillo (Pompton Plains, N.J.) caused three turnovers and scooped four groundballs.
  • Carmine Comitini (Staten Island, N.Y.) forced two turnovers and collected three groundballs.
  • Matthew Esposito (Manorville, N.Y.) and Tim Doyle (Selden, N.Y.) each caused two miscues and secured a pair of groundballs.
  • Maxwell Green Wright (Central Islip, N.Y.) closed the day with an assist and two caused turnovers.
  • Anthony Paggiotta (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) won nine face-offs and secured three groundballs.
  • Bobby DeSantis (Patchogue, N.Y.) won four draws and scooped five groundballs.
  • Kenny Leen (Miller Place, N.Y.) picked up the win in goal, turning aside 16 shots for the Knights.
 
For The Valiants
  • McGrath finished with five points, including three goals.
  • Berch posted two goals, a groundball and a caused turnover.
  • Nick Padovani won 12 face-offs and grabbed nine groundballs.
  • Joe Ulzheimer suffered the loss in goal with nine saves.
 
Game Statistics
  • Manhattanville posted a 57-38 advantage in shots overall, but the Mount totaled a slim 24-23 edge in shots on target.
  • Face-offs were even in the game at 13 apiece.
  • Manhattanville held a 40-30 edge in groundballs.
  • Mount Saint Mary was 18-for-24 in clears.
  • Manhattanville finished 14-for-17 in clears.
  • Mount Saint Mary took advantage of Valiant penalties, going 3-for-5 with the man-advantage.
