Knights Downed at USMMA

Kings Point, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team continued Skyline Conference play Wednesday night, suffering a loss on the road to the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a final score of 13-5. Three different Knights finished with multiple points on the day and freshman goalie Kenny Leen (Miller Place, N.Y) put together another strong performance, turning aside 19 shots.

Thursday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in Skyline Conference play while USMMA improves to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in conference competition.

How It Happened
  • USMMA smothered Mount Saint Mary through the first two quarters, taking a commanding 10-2 lead going into the intermission.
  • The Mariners came out on fire, scoring the first six goals pf the game.
  • Mount Saint Mary got on the board with 1:12 left in the first period when Xavier Rodriguez (Hackettstown, N.J.) finished off a feed from Nick Gurello (Selden, N.Y.), making the score 6-1.
  •  USMMA continued their dominant play in the second stanza, connecting on four out of the five scores in the period.
  • The Knights lone goal of the quarter came at the 11:41 mark when sophomore Larry Frank (Staten Island, N.Y) connected on his 11th goal of the year.
  • The second half featured six total tallies, with the Mariners once again scoring the first three goals to start the half, pushing the score to 13-2.
  • Mount Saint Mary scored the final three goals of the game, with Frank picking up his second tally of the game on a feed from Sal Gallucci (Massapequa, N.Y.) with 5:11 left in the third period.
  • In the final period, Gurrello scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season, both coming on feeds from Rodriguez.
  • The Knights would hold the Mariners scoreless for the final 21 minutes of the game, wrapping up the game at 13-5.
For The Knights
  • Three Knights tallied multiple points on the day.
  • Frank and Gurrello were the only Knights to score multiple goals, with Gurrello assisting on another.
  • Rodriguez was the only other Knight that connected for a goal, while also dishing out two assists.
  • Joseph Angelillo (Pompton Plains, N.J.) picked up four groundballs and caused three turnovers.
  • Carmine Comitini (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Bobby DeSantis (Patchogue, N.Y.) each picked up four groundballs and DeSantis went 4-5 in faceoffs.
  • Anthony Paggiotta (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) won seven face-offs for the Knights and scooped four groundballs.
  • Mathew Esposito (Manorville, N.Y.) caused three miscues and scooped up two groundballs.
  • Leen suffered the loss in goal, turning aside 19 shots in the effort.
For The Mariners
  • Jack DeTommaso led the way offensively, tallying three goals and assisting on two other scores. 
  • William Badeer, Michael Emerick and Carter Hall all connected for two goals apiece, ending the night as three of four Mariners to score multiple goals.
  • Four other Mariners got in the scoring column. Jack Collins, Owen Barcus, Damien Martin and Erich Diehl each contributed a goal each to add to the Mariners scoring attack.
  • Dom Mirack collected a game-high six groundballs.
  • Maverick Geller had four groundballs and caused one turnover
  • Michael Hofstetter collected three groundball and caused one miscue.
  • Samuel Stephenson secured the win in goal, turning aside seven shots over 50 minutes.
Game Statistics
  • USMMA held a 48-32 advantage in shots, including a 32-17 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Mariners controlled groundballs, holding a 39-29 advantage.
  • Face-offs ended in a tie at 11-11.
  • Mount Saint Mary went 20-30 in clearing chances while USMMA went an efficient 23-27 in clears.
  • The Knights went 1-4 in man-advantage opportunities.
