Throggs Neck, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team returned to conference play on Saturday and dropped 11-3 and 9-8 decisions on the road at Maritime. The Knights clubbed six home runs on the day, including two each from
Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and
Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) in game two.
Saturday's sweep drops Mount Saint Mary to 6-19 overall on the season and 2-6 in league play, while Maritime improves to 16-9 overall and 4-2 in Skyline Conference action.
Game 1: Maritime 11 – Mount Saint Mary 3
How It Happened
- The Knights got on the board first in the opener when Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) connected on his first home run of the season with two outs and no one on in the third inning.
- The one-run advantage stood until the fourth when Maritime plated five runs to surge in front 5-1.
- The Privateers strung together four hits in the inning, including a three-run home run with one out in the inning off the bat of Chris Felder.
- The Knights scratched out two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the disadvantage to 5-3.
- After loading the bases with one out, Cullen Roper (Stratford, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch ahead of a run scoring groundout from Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.) that pushed Franco across.
- Leading by two runs, Maritime went back to work in the sixth inning, plating six more runs to close out the scoring in the game.
- Matt Milone led off the frame with a home run and Freddy Forgione belted a three-run homer to close out the scoring in the inning.
For The Knights
- Goodwin finished game one 1-for-3 with a home run, run scored, RBI and stolen base.
- Franco went 2-for-4 for the Knights with a run scored.
- Brandon Nolasco (Chester, N.Y.) picked up the only other hit for the Mount, going 1-for-3.
- Roper was one of three Knights hit with a pitch and scored a run.
- Liam Horan (Stony Point, N.Y.) suffered the loss, going 5.0 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits while fanning five.
Game 2: Maritime 9 – Mount Saint Mary 8 (F/10)
How It Happened
- Mount Saint Mary raced out to an 8-1 lead in game two, scoring at least one run in each of their first five at-bats.
- Franco clubbed a one-out homer in the first to open the scoring.
- A two-run second inning featured round trippers from Nolasco and Brust to give the Knights a 3-0 advantage.
- Franco gave the Knights a 4-0 lead with his second home run of the game, a solo blast to left field.
- After Maritime got on the board in the home half of the third on a Forgione homer, the Knights spread their lead to 8-1 with a single tally in the fourth and three more runs in the fifth.
- Franco drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the fourth that pushed home Brust.
- In the fifth, Merlin laced a one-out double and Anthony Picone (Salisbury Mills, N.Y.) singled before Brust launched a three-run shot to center to move the Knights in front 8-1.
- Maritime began its comeback with three runs in the seventh and closed to within 8-7 with three more tallies in the eighth.
- The seventh inning uprising was highlighted by a Michael Frazzetta lead-off home run, with Rob Copozzi pushing home two runs with a single in the three run eighth.
- The Knights were an out away from closing out the win, before Felder scored the tying run on a two-out error to even the score at 8-8 in the bottom of the ninth.
- The Knights put the go ahead run on in the 10th, but were unable to advance it pas first base.
- In the home half of the 10th, Maritime put two runners on via walk and following a Copozzi steal of third, he crossed with the game winning run on a one-out bunt from Jaden Shea.
For The Knights
- Franco finished game two 2-for-4 with two homers, two runs scored and three RBI.
- Brust clubbed two home runs, scored three times and drove in four runs for the Knights.
- Merlin doubled and scored a run.
- Nolasco homered, drew two walks, scored a run and drove in one.
- Picone posted a hit, drew a walk and scored once.
- Goodwin went 2-for-5 with a double.
- Mike Scotto (Putnam, N.Y.) worked 6.1 innings in the start, allowing four runs on eight hits while fanning four.
- Michael Di Tullio (Montgomery, N.Y.) suffered the loss in relief, allowing an earned run on two hits. Di Tullio walked four and struck out one.
