Mount Saint Mary Dealt Road Loss At Bridgewater State

Franco drives in three runs

Bridgewater, Mass.  – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team traveled to Bridgewater State Tuesday afternoon and suffered a 12-5 loss to the Bears. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) each recorded two hits for the Knights and Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) drove in three runs.
 
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 6-17 overall on the season with the Bears improving their overall record to 17-7.
 
How It Happened
  • After a scoreless first inning, the Bears jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second, stringing together five hits and taking advantage of an error.
  • The first six Bear hitters in the big second reached, including four straight hits to open the frame.
  • Mathew Pigeon opened the scoring with a two-run double and later scored on a run scoring single off the bat of Kevin Lindsay.
  • Jay Wladkowski drove in the final run of the frame with a sacrifice fly.
  • Mount Saint Mary answered right back with five runs of its own in the top of the third inning on the strength of six hits and an error.
  • Singles from Shane Finch (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and Goodwin around a double from Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) loaded the bases for the Mount with one out.
  • Franco ripped a double to left to clear the bases and bring the Knights to within 5-3.
  • Tait singled Franco to third and following an error Franco scampered home to cut the deficit to 5-4.
  • Tait later advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the tying run on a two-out single from Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.).
  • The Bears came back with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good on another run scoring hit from Pigeon.
  • Bridgewater State extended the lead to 7-5 with a run in the fifth and broke the game open with two tallies in the sixth and three more in the eighth.
  • Joey Molis homered in the fifth ahead of two unearned runs in the sixth.
  • The three-run eighth was highlighted by run scoring singles from Riley Thornell and Molis with Pigeon delivering the final run with a bases loaded walk.
  • Bridgewater State outhit the Mount 14-8 and scored four unearned runs off of five Knight miscues.
 
For The Knights
  • Goodwin finished the game 2-for-4 with a run out of the lead-off spot.
  • Tait raised his average to .348 following a 2-for-4 effort with a run scored.
  • Franco ripped his fifth double of the season and pushed his RBI total to a team-high 13, adding a run scored.
  • Finch and Brust each had a hit and a run, with Brust posting his team leading sixth double of the season.
  • Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) made the start and surrendered four earned runs on five hits in 2.0 innings.
  • Brian Gregory (Florida, N.Y.) took the loss after allowing just one earned run in 4.0 innings, striking out five.
  • Michael Di Tullio (Montgomery, N.Y.) worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Mount, striking out three.
 
For The Bears
  • Molis closed the win 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Pigeon went 3-for-3 with two walks, a double, run and four RBI.
  • Lindsay finished up 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI.
  • Cam James recorded two hits and scored twice.
  • Scott Emerson closed the game with a hit and two runs.
  • Shane Handrahan moved to 4-0 with the win, working 6.0 innings. He allowed five runs on eight hits and fanned six.

  • Mount Saint Mary travels to Maritime for a Skyline set with the Privateers on Saturday.
  • Bridgewater State opens a three-game MASCAC series with Salem State on Friday.
